At Parap Primary School the Australian Curriculum (AC) directs our Mathematics teaching and learning programs. Our beliefs about mathematics align with the AC where we believe that mathematics creates opportunities and enriches the lives of all Australians. Our Mathematics programs are organised around the three content strands and four proficiency strands.

Our aims are to ensure that our students:

  • Are confident, creative users and communicators of mathematics, able to investigate, represent and interpret situations in their personal and work lives and as active citizens.
  • Develop an increasingly sophisticated understanding of mathematical concepts and fluency with processes, and are able to pose and solve problems and reason in Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability.
  • Recognise connections between the areas of Mathematics and other curriculum areas and appreciate mathematics as an accessible and enjoyable subject to study.

MATHS – ESSENTIAL FOR LEARNING, ESSENTIAL FOR LIFE

Our mathematics program provides engaging learning experiences that assist students to develop real life skills in:

  • Number-  (Place Value, Fractions, Money, Patterns)
  • Measurement & Geometry– (Length, Mass, Capacity, Time, Shapes, Location)
  • Statistics and Probability – (Chance and Data)

RESEARCH INFORMED BEST PRACTICE – INFORMED BY DATA

A key element of our mathematics program is the collaborative development and implementation of purposeful and effective learning experiences based on research informed best practice and informed by data. This includes;

  • Jo Boaler – Stanford University – Mathematical Mindsets
  • Peter Sullivan- Teaching important mathematical ideas through problem solving and reasoning
  • Big Ideas in Number- Di Siemon
  • Professor Martin Westwall – Transforming tasks
